A very common issue among homeowners is concern over having mature trees very close to a house or building. Often, heavy snowfalls or high winds can cause a weak or leaning tree to break and fall against or on top of a house or building, and this can cause catastrophic damage.
Other concerns over having big trees near a house include foundation damage from roots pushing against the concrete, and damage to water & sewer piping from penetrating roots. Fire prevention can also be a consideration when assessing trees around your house, especially for log homes with cedar shingles. |
Often it is a much better strategy to remove or top the suspect trees before significant damage occurs.
When it comes to dealing with trees that are close to your house or other buildings, we have a number of options to choose from. If a tree is leaning towards a building, sometimes the risk can be reduced by pruning branches off of the lower side of the tree. If the tree has more branches on one side, this unbalanced weight will pull the tree to one side. If some of the branches are removed from the heavy side, the tree will straighten up and there will be less risk of the tree falling over. Pruning branches can also be a good option if the branches are hanging over a roof or rubbing on walls and windows. Topping a tree (removing the top portion of the trunk) is another option that can help to avoid removing the whole tree. Up to one third of the tree's height can be safely removed without risking the tree's life. Topping a tree will significantly reduce the wind load in a storm, as well as reduce the danger area if the tree does blow down. Often, coniferous trees will have a load of cones near the top, and these represent significant weight on the tree. Removing the cone-laden top will lessen the chance of the tree falling or leaning. |
If the decision is made to remove a tree, we have a few more options to consider in order to get the tree out without risking property damage or personal injury.
Falling a tree (cutting the base of the trunk) is the easiest way to remove a tree, but this is only if a wide-open area exists that is not sensitive to impact. The presence of buildings, power lines, gardens, and other trees must be considered before falling a tree. Ropes and winches can be used to prevent trees from falling in the wrong direction, and branches can be laid down over the drop zone to prevent damage to lawns or sidewalks. |
If falling the tree is not an option, the tree can be removed piece-by=piece, by either climbing the tree or using a hydraulic lift. The tree would be cut into pieces small enough to handle, and then the pieces could be lowered to the ground with a rope or with the lift. In the event that a massive piece of the tree trunk needs to be removed all at once, a crane is used to lift the piece up and way after it is cut.
