Have you always wanted to know what it would be like to live/stay on a sustainable small farm?
Come and experience the energy and excitement that comes from being immersed in Permaculture at Rancho Relaxo, a working Permaculture demonstration farm! Our five acres of paradise is just minutes outside of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, which displays some of the best mountain views and pristine vistas that Alberta has to offer. This farm will display many different types of systems that can be used to produce & store food, produce & store energy, or turn waste products into something useful.
Our family has 4 kids, which live here at different times. Sage (15yrs), and Renn (14yrs), live here full time. Harrison (23yrs) and Elliott (26yrs) will visit from time to time on weekends. The kids are very sociable, and will be willing to help, play, sing, wrestle, paint, draw, or drum on anything you choose!
Our home is an old 5 bedroom farmhouse that has been converted to a high-efficiency building. Features include rubber roofing, ICF syrofoam walls for insulation, cement-fibre siding, high-efficiency furnace and wood-burning fireplace, solar water heating, solar air heating, solar electricity, rainwater harvest, air-lock entrance, attached root cellar and much more.
Our house and public toilets feature a simple compost toilet system which saves us over 250,000 litters of water per year, plus the electricity it would have taken to pump that much water from our well and through the septic system.
The property is designed to maximize production, but also to help form connections between people and their environment. Connections with other people, animals, and nature allow us to see things in a different perspective.
We try to obtain the highest quality food possible. We are hoping for local, organic, GMO-free, chemical free, fertilizer-free, but in small-town Alberta, these options are not always available. Our drinking water is from a chlorine-free, and fluoride-free well. Breakfast (8am) usually consists of porridge or cereal with milk. Lunch (12:30pm) is usually eggs & toast with some supper leftovers, and supper (7pm) is more diverse. We are not vegetarian all the time, but some meals are.
Daily activities can be arranged including hiking, fishing, camping, river floats, beach days, wildlife viewing, farm tours and much more.
Starting as low as $70/night, room choices are pictured below. Please contact us for more detailed information.
